REGION OF MURCIA



The region of Murcia is one of Spain’s hidden gems. Located in the South-East of Spain, between Andalusia and Valencia, it is well-known for its warm weather, beaches, natural parks, gastronomy and culture.

The Region of Murcia has over 170 km of coastline, formed by beaches, coves, cliffs, small islands and many Protected Natural Areas. The closest beaches to Alhama Nature Resort are on Puerto de Mazarrón, only 27 km away. MURCIA GASTRONOMY

Fresh, local products are the signature of Murcia’s cuisine. Fruits and vegetables from the plains, fish and seafood from the coast, rice, olive oil and meat are the base of a healthy Mediterranean diet.

  There is a vast array of restaurants and cafés everywhere in the Region. The offer ranges from simple tapas to Michelin Star awarded restaurants in Murcia and Cartagena.

The local wines from the northern areas of Jumilla and Bullas are also remarkable. Several wineries are open to visitors and there are wine tours available. 

Some of the most typical dishes are: 

  • “Caldero”: Rice cooked in a rich fish broth, typical of the Mar Menor area.  
  • Rice recipes similar to “paella”, with vegetables, seafood, ribs or rabbit. 
  • “Zarangollo”: Sauteed onion and courgette with eggs. 
  • “Cocido”: Rich stew with chickpeas, vegetables and meat.
  • “Marinera”: Tapa of tuna salad on a crunchy bread stick with an anchovy on the top. 

Many traditional Murcian recipes are vegan or can be easily adapted, such as “menestra”, “potaje”, “pisto”, “migas” or “olla gitana”.  

SOME PLACES WORTH VISITING IN THE REGION OF MURCIA 

  • City of Murcia: There are many landmarks to visit in Murcia, such as the stunning cathedral or the Casino. The town is well known for its lively and welcoming atmosphere, as well as its nightlife. Murcia offers many cultural events, such as the Easter Processions, the Springtime Festival, the September “Feria”, and music festivals such as “Warm Up”. 
  • Cartagena: The 3,000 years old city.  Cartagena boasts a Roman Theatre, one of the oldest Mediterranean ports, several archaeological museums and a beautiful Modernist town centre. It also offers many cultural events, such as Easter processions, the “Romans and Carthaginians” festival that recreates the Punic Wars and the music festival “La Mar de Músicas”.
  • Caravaca de la Cruz: The fifth Holy City of Catholic Christianity. This beautiful town is crowned by a medieval castle and church, where the remains of the Holy Cross are guarded, according to the Holy Cross legend.
  • La Manga del Mar Menor: Strip of land that separates the Mediterranean from the Mar Menor. Popular tourist destination, with access to both Mediterranean and Mar Menor beaches. 
  • Valle de Ricote: This beautiful Valley along the Segura river is formed by several picturesque small towns. Take a walk across the orchards or the riverbanks, enjoy the peach trees in bloom,  paddle down the river, visit archaeological sites or relax in a thermal water spa.
  • Parque Natural de Calblanque: A natural park where you can observe the wildlife and enjoy some virgin beaches listed amongst the most beautiful in Spain.   
  • Cabo de Palos: Popular tourist destination for divers, due to the marine reserve of Islas Hormigas. Not to miss the iconic lighthouse. 
  • Balneario de Archena: Thermal water spa with origin in the Vth Century B.C. Its modern facilities, pools and health treatments make the «Balneario» a popular destination for those wishing to improve their health.
