REGION OF MURCIA

MURCIA GASTRONOMY
Fresh, local produce is the hallmark of Murcian gastronomy.  Fruits and vegetables from the fertile lowlands, fish and seafood from the coast, rice, olive oil and meat form the basis of a healthy Mediterranean diet.  There is a wide choice of restaurants and bars throughout the Region of Murcia, ranging from the simple tapas bar to Michelin-starred restaurants in Murcia and Cartagena.  Notable are the local wines of the northern area, such as Jumilla and Bullas. Several wineries are open for visits and there are specialised wine tours. Some of the most typical dishes are: 
  • "Caldero": Rice cooked in a rich fish broth, typical of the Mar Menor area.  
  • Rice dishes with vegetables, seafood, costillejas, rabbit or snails.
  • Zarangollo: Scrambled eggs, courgettes and onions
  • Cocido: Stew with chickpeas, vegetables and meat.
  • Marinera: Russian salad with an anchovy on top, served on a doughnut.
Many of Murcia's traditional recipes are vegan or can be easily adapted: stew, stew, ratatouille, migas, olla gitana, etc.
PLACES TO VISIT IN THE REGION OF MURCIA
  • City of Murcia: There are many monuments to visit in Murcia, such as the impressive cathedral or the Casino. The city is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, as well as for its nightlife. Murcia offers many cultural events, such as the Easter processions, the Fiestas de Primavera, the Feria de Septiembre or music festivals like the "Warm Up".  
  • Cartagena: The three thousand year old city. Cartagena has a Roman Theatre, one of the oldest ports in the Mediterranean, several archaeological museums and a beautiful modernist old town. It also offers many cultural events, such as the Easter processions, the festival of Carthaginians and Romans that recreates the Punic wars and the festival "La Mar de Músicas". 
  • Caravaca de la Cruz: The fifth Holy City of Catholicism. This beautiful town is crowned by a medieval castle and a Basilica where the remains of the cross of Christ are kept, according to the legend of the Vera Cruz. 
  • La Manga del Mar Menor: Strip of land separating the Mediterranean from the Mar Menor. It is a popular tourist destination, with access to both the beaches of the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor. 
  • Ricote Valley: Valley that runs through several picturesque villages along the Segura River. You can stroll through the orchards and along the riverbank, enjoy the spectacle of the peach blossom, make the descent of the Segura, visit archaeological remains or relax in a thermal spa.  
  • Calblanque Natural Park: A natural park where you can observe the wild flora and fauna, as well as visit some of the unspoilt beaches on the lists of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. 
  • Cabo de Palos: A popular destination for diving enthusiasts, due to the Islas Hormigas marine reserve. Don't miss the iconic lighthouse.  
  • Balneario de Archena: A spa with thermal waters dating back to the 5th century B.C. Its modern facilities, swimming pools and treatments have made it a very popular destination for those who want to take care of their health.
